Dr Eliana Barrenho, a Senior Health Economist currently seconded from the OECD to the Danish Medicines Council and Amgros in Denmark, will examine the role of transparency in pharmaceutical pricing in the context of recent US proposals to link US medicine prices to international prices.
As pharmaceutical expenditure continues to rise, transparency in medicine pricing has become a major policy issue worldwide. Governments are increasingly seeking greater visibility over prices, discounts, and reimbursement arrangements to support affordability, equitable access, and public accountability. At the same time, transparency raises important questions about negotiation dynamics, international reference pricing, and incentives for innovation.
This session will examine the role of transparency in pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement from both economic and policy perspectives, as well as the trade-offs between transparency, affordability, equity, and long-term sustainability in pharmaceutical policy. It will draw on recent OECD work on medicine price transparency and discuss the renewed relevance of these debates in the context of recent US Most-Favoured Nation (MFN) proposals linking US medicine prices to international prices, and their potential implications for global pricing strategies, launch decisions, and access to medicines.
If you have ever wondered what kind of work someone with an MSc or a PhD in Health Economics and Policy can do, join us in these seminars.
