Research Overview

I am a volcanologist who uses a combination of field studies, numerical modelling, social science, and laboratory experiments to investigate the processes that operate during the transport and eruption of magma. Current research topics include:

  • The physical processes that control magma fragmentation
  • Understanding the rheology of complex fluids
  • The dispersal of volcanic ash in the atmosphere
  • Co-creation of hazard products with Indigenous communities
  • Flow properties of pyroclastic density currents
  • The subsurface transport of mantle xenoliths
  • Understanding past volcanism on other planetary bodies
  • Hazard map production alongside government agencies

I also enjoy crossing traditional discipline boundaries and have collaborated with engineers, rheologists, material scientists, and ecologists.
