Speaker: Dr Cher Chow (Ecology and Conservation grouping, LEC) Title: Drivers of coral reef productivity

Talk summary

Just as many countries are measured by their economies of buying and selling goods, ecosystems function on processes of production and consumption. Ecological productivity is critical to the persistence of biotic communities, habitats, and to the human dimension, food. I’ll be presenting some of my recent work on coral reef productivity. The talk casts a wide net of methods from millimeter-resolution 3D modelling of reefs, Bayesian life history models, to global satellite data to answer: what drives productive coral reefs?

Bio

Cher Chow is a current postdoctoral researcher with the REEFS group working with James Robinson on how energetic inputs from the open ocean support coral reef productivity. Her work centers on how coral reefs function, combining spatial/imaging analyses to tackle these questions from community to seascape scales.
