Skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence against harmful microbes. A better understanding towards skin in health and disease is important, as skin disorders are extremely common.
My group is interested in improving our understanding towards gene expression changes in skin in development, health, perturbed physiology (pigmentation, wound healing, and aging), disease (chronic wounds, psoriasis, eczema, and melanoma), and in a variety of species (human, mouse and salmon). My group investigate these topics using transcriptomics (single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, network analysis) and histological methods to elucidate the relationship between cells and genes.
PhD Supervision Interests
I would be happy to discuss potential projects with perspective PhD and MSc By Research students on: 1) developing bioinformatics tools for analysing single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics data, 2) molecular phenotyping of diabetic chronic wounds, 3) understanding temperature stress on fish skin and gills.For initial enquiries, please email me at b.shih@lancaster.ac.uk.
