Pupils from Confucius Institute Teaching Centres Take Part in the 18th Chinese Calligraphy Competition
Pupils from two of Lancaster University Confucius Institute’s teaching sites are participating in the 18th Chinese Calligraphy Competition 2026, organised by the UK Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education.
This year marks the first participation of Anchorsholme Academy in the national competition, while Hawes Side Academy is returning following its outstanding success in 2025.
Last year, Hawes Side Academy achieved exceptional results in its debut appearance at the 17th Chinese Calligraphy Competition. All eight pupil submissions received awards, including one First Prize, three Second Prizes, and four Third Prizes — an impressive achievement for the school’s first-ever participation.
Among the award winners was Frankie Maiden, who received Second Prize in the Hard-Pen Calligraphy category. Her achievement reflected both her enthusiasm for learning Chinese and her remarkable talent in Chinese character writing.
Encouraged by last year’s success, Hawes Side Academy pupils are once again taking part in this year’s competition, continuing to explore Chinese language and culture through the traditional art of calligraphy.
Meanwhile, Anchorsholme Academy is participating in the competition for the first time in 2026. Pupils have completed and submitted their entries, marking an exciting milestone for the school’s Chinese language programme.
The Chinese Calligraphy Competition offers young learners across the UK a valuable opportunity to develop their understanding of Chinese language and culture while fostering creativity, patience, and intercultural appreciation through calligraphy practice.
Lancaster University Confucius Institute congratulates all participating pupils and teachers on their dedication and wishes them every success in the 2026 competition.
