Engineering Team Finalists in the IChemE Global Awards 2025 for Sustainability
School of Engineering’s Dr Basu Saha’s collaborative project, “Pioneering Decarbonisation in UK Marine Transport,” delivered with Green Fuels Research (GFR) and Cardiff University, was shortlisted as a finalist for the IChemE Global Awards 2025 in the Sustainability Award category.
Established in 1994, the IChemE Global Awards are widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious honours in chemical and process engineering, recognising excellence, exceptional innovation, and impact across the sector that advance the profession and benefit society.
The awards follow a rigorous and highly competitive judging process, making the team’s achievement in reaching the finals a significant mark of excellence. Speaking at the event, the IChemE President Raffaella Ocone opened the ceremony by highlighting the exceptional calibre of this year’s entries and the wide-ranging contributions chemical engineers continue to make to society. She emphasised the importance of attracting a diverse pipeline of talent into the profession and encouraged the community to champion and showcase best practice as a way of inspiring future generations of chemical engineers.
Raffaella Ocone said, “The breadth and diversity of the entries clearly demonstrate how chemical engineering touches so many areas of society. It is this richness and the positive impact that our discipline makes that we recognise tonight. We are honouring the very best in chemical, process, and biochemical engineering.
From sustainable fuel technologies and innovative water solutions, to pioneering advances in food and drink, nuclear technology, and healthcare, the IChemE Global Awards span an extraordinary range of industries and sectors.”
Dr Basu Saha, Director of Studies for Chemical Engineering at Lancaster University, said, “Being named a Finalist in the Sustainability award category at this global stage recognises our commitment to pioneering sustainable marine fuel technologies and contributing to the global transition toward a low-carbon future.”
This year, the IChemE Global Awards event showcased an outstanding breadth of innovation and leadership, with entries spanning 16 categories from the US, Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and beyond - highlighting the global impact of the profession and the diverse perspectives driving progress across industries.
