About me

Hi! My name is Maria Lousia and I am from Limassol, Cyprus. I study BSc Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University. After completing my first year, I seized the opportunity given to me to complete my second year at Lancaster University Leipzig. I began my year abroad in September 2024 and completed all my exams by the end of May 2025. I am so grateful for the experience as I was able to immerse myself in the German culture, leave my comfort zone, speak a foreign language daily and make friends from different backgrounds.

Why I chose to study abroad

I moved from Cyprus to the UK in 2020 to study BA English Language and Literature at the University of Essex. After having completed my degree, I came to Lancaster University to study for a second Bachelor’s degree. After having lived in the UK for four consecutive years, I loved the idea of being able to study abroad and get a unique experience.

Lancaster University Leipzig was a great fit for me since the modules I studied were identical to the ones in the UK campus and it put me at ease. I will continue in Lancaster, UK for my final year without having to worry about not having the knowledge required.

How Lancaster University helped me find my study abroad opportunity

On the university webpage there is a designated study abroad section which provides a lot of information regarding all the options available. I sent emails to the study abroad team and they were extremely patient, helpful and supportive throughout applications and also informed me on opportunities with funding.

How my first day studying abroad felt

It was weird in the best way possible. I walked into a classroom which was similar to a workshop room in Lancaster. I soon discovered that there were no lecture theaters! Small classrooms were enough to fit the small number of students in my modules. Having lectures resemble workshops helped me immensely as the lecturers could tell when we followed and when they had to explain again. Also, everyone knew everyone! It was such a small cohort and that made it easy to mingle and blend in.

Favourite activities

I absolutely loved waking up on the weekends and hopping on trains to see Germany. Our student ID gave us access to free public transport, with limitations on fast trains, and I took advantage of it. I visited cities like Berlin and Dresden and even took flights to other European cities as flights were so cheap.

Best memories

I have made so many friends and connections in Leipzig. We have shared moments that I will reminisce for times to come. From late night tea drinking with my Arab friends to long Tuesdays at university with classmates and random city exploration with friends, it was a blast.

What I gained from studying abroad

Academically, it was a great experience as I developed my knowledge in my degree field further and always felt supported by lecturers. I got to truly experience Leipzig which now feels like a home away from home. And lastly, I have gained friends for life.
