Research Overview

Dr John McDaniel is a lecturer in law (crime/ criminal justice) and teaches criminal law, human rights and civil liberties. John's research sits at the intersection of law, technology, human rights and policing, with particular expertise in transparency laws and information rights, including freedom of information and other sunshine laws. His work examines police accountability, data-gathering, artificial intelligence, transnational policing, repression and state power through a transparency lens, and how secrecy shapes the treatment of vulnerable communities, racial justice, and the protection of fundamental rights. He has advised police forces and the National Crime Agency, and his work has been cited by parliamentary committees and outlets such as The Economist.

John's work has received funding from the AHRC, the British Academy/ Leverhulme and the Irish Research Council. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
