Class 1 is any type of electrical equipment with an “earth connection” that ensures a fault is safely disconnected, the protective device supplies the circuit trips and protects the user.
Common Class 1 items include toasters, kettles, microwaves, and fridges.
Class 1 equipment requires regular PAT tests to check the earth connection and the cable insulation.
Class 1 electrical item symbol

A Class 1 item will have a metal casing and a plug with a metal earth pin.
Class 2, also known as ‘double insulated’ electrical equipment, has extra insulation to prevent contact with live parts. As such, the equipment does not have an earth connection. Class 2 equipment will have regular visual inspections to check that their insulating protective covers remain adequate and safe.
Examples of Class 2 items include drills, hedge trimmers, photocopiers, and computers.

A Class 1 item will have a plastic casing.
The Facilities team will inspect and test all portable appliances in accordance with best practices.
The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment provides clear advice and guidance on the inspection and testing regimes to be implemented, based on risk.
Note: The Facilities team will issue adequate prior notice to building occupants when a risk-based testing programme is undertaken. Appliances should be readily available to the contracted testers on the test date. Any appliances left in storage on the test date will be overlooked. Faulty equipment will be removed from service and marked as unsafe for use.
