Storage tank delivery to affect Sport Lancaster access across one weekend in December

Bigforth Drive adjacent to the Sports Centre.

On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December, the final five storage tanks will be delivered as part of Lancaster University’s Net Zero Energy Project, affecting access to Sport Lancaster over the weekend.

Police will escort the storage tanks from Lancaster services on the M6 to junction 33, then along the A6 through Galgate and up Bigforth Drive, the University’s main entrance. The deliveries are expected to arrive at regular intervals between 7am and 5pm, although timings are subject to change.

Due to the scale of the tanks, the load will overhang the width of Bigforth Drive when it arrives on campus during delivery.

The following travel and access changes will be in place:

Vehicle users

  • On Thursday 11 December, the incoming lane on Bigforth Drive will be narrowed to enable the removal of the Belisha beacons on the pedestrian crossing outside the Sports Centre. Vehicle users should be cautious of pedestrians using the crossing when driving past the Sports Centre. The beacons will be reinstated on Wednesday 17 December.
  • Bigforth Drive and the Sports Centre car park will remain open, but temporary closures will be in place during delivery and while vehicles exit campus at intervals across both days. Police and banksmen will be on site to manage traffic.
  • Customers are encouraged to use the Sports Field Car Park where possible. The car park can be accessed from the A6 via Green Lane. Parking is free for two hours with the option to use RingGo for any additional hours.

Pedestrians

Lancaster University is working to reduce the impact on its campus community as far as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
